Hand lotion vs cream vs serum
| Product | Typical feel | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Hand lotion | Light, fluid and quick to spread | You want frequent daytime moisture without a rich finish |
| Hand cream | Richer and more cushioning | Hands feel dry after washing, work or cold weather |
| Hand balm | Often dense and more occlusive | Very dry areas need a protective final layer |
| Hand serum | Usually light and ingredient-focused | You want hydration or another targeted cosmetic benefit under cream |
The categories overlap. A product called “lotion” can be richer than another brand's “cream”, and a serum does not automatically contain a higher percentage of every useful ingredient. The best comparison is the full formula and how it feels on your hands.
How to choose a hand moisturiser
- Choose a lighter lotion if you reapply often during work or daytime.
- Choose cream or balm if repeated washing, cold air or manual work leaves skin feeling rough.
- Look for humectants, emollients and occlusive ingredients rather than one fashionable ingredient alone.
- If fragrance irritates your hands, choose a suitable fragrance-free product.
- For daytime outdoor use, protect the backs of the hands from sun exposure and reapply as directed.
A simple hand-care routine
- Wash with comfortable rather than very hot water.
- Dry carefully, including between the fingers.
- Apply lotion or cream while the skin still feels slightly comfortable rather than waiting for painful dryness.
- Use gloves for wet work or irritant contact when appropriate.
- Apply a richer cream or balm before bed if the skin benefits from it.
What if hands are very dry or irritated?
Cosmetic hand cream can improve comfort and reduce the look of dryness, but persistent cracking, bleeding, swelling, a spreading rash or suspected infection needs suitable advice. If you have hand eczema, follow the treatment and emollient guidance given by your clinician rather than replacing it with a fragranced cosmetic.
