What mascara can realistically do

Mascara coats existing lashes. The brush and formula can create several temporary visual effects:

• darkening pale lash tips;
• separating lashes for clearer definition;
• adding fibres or film for a longer-looking result;
• building volume around the lash shaft;
• supporting a curl, depending on formula and technique.

These effects disappear when the mascara is removed. Conditioning ingredients may make the formula feel more flexible, but that is different from proving new lash growth. Treat dramatic before-and-after photographs cautiously when lighting, lash curlers, multiple coats or false lashes may also affect the result.

Mascara, lash serum and medicines are not the same

When a product claims to affect growth, check who makes it, whether the claim is clearly defined, and what evidence the brand provides. “Longer-looking” usually describes a cosmetic effect; “grows lashes” implies a biological effect and requires stronger substantiation.

How to choose mascara safely

• Choose a product intended specifically for the eye area.
• Read the ingredient list if you have known sensitivities.
• Keep the container closed and follow the stated period after opening.
• Do not share mascara or use a shop tester directly on the eyes.
• Do not add water or saliva to revive a dried formula.
• Stop using the product immediately if it causes irritation.
• Avoid eye cosmetics while you have an eye infection or inflamed skin around the eye.

The FDA’s eye-cosmetic guidance warns that contaminated eye products can cause infection and that applicators can injure the eye. Apply mascara only when stationary, with clean hands and a clean wand. If an applicator scratches the eye or irritation persists, seek medical advice.

Application for fuller-looking lashes

1. Use an eyelash curler on clean lashes before mascara if you want more lift, following the tool instructions.
2. Remove excess formula from the wand without pumping air repeatedly into the tube.
3. Place the brush near the roots without touching the waterline.
4. Move upwards in a controlled motion and use the tip for the shorter corner lashes.
5. Allow the first coat to settle briefly before adding another thin coat.
6. Separate clumps with a clean spoolie before the formula fully dries.

What if lashes are falling out?

Do not rely on mascara or a cosmetic serum to diagnose or treat lash loss. Repeated rubbing, difficult removal and pulling at extensions can damage existing lashes, while skin or health conditions may also contribute. Speak to a GP if lash or eyebrow loss is sudden, patchy, persistent or accompanied by pain, swelling, scaling or changes elsewhere.
