What “UV” and “LED” mean in nail lamps
Traditional salon “UV lamps” commonly used fluorescent-style UV bulbs. Modern “LED lamps” use light-emitting diodes, but those LEDs still emit ultraviolet wavelengths selected to activate photoinitiators in compatible nail products. So “UV vs LED” is useful shopping shorthand, not a simple division between UV radiation and non-UV light.
Product compatibility comes before lamp marketing
Gel systems are formulated with photoinitiators that respond to specific wavelength ranges and energy exposure. A lamp should therefore be used with products that its manufacturer or nail-system manufacturer identifies as compatible. A lamp that cures one gel well is not proof that it is suitable for every system.
Wavelength range and diode coverage
Modern lamps may use dual-wavelength or broader diode combinations to support a wider range of contemporary products. The exact output matters more than the presence of the word “LED” on the case. Why wattage is not curing power by itself
Electrical wattage indicates how much power the lamp consumes or is rated to use; it does not directly tell you the UV irradiance reaching every nail. Optical design, diode efficiency, geometry and distance all influence exposure.

Timers, sensors and professional workflow
Preset timers help technicians follow system instructions consistently. Automatic hand sensors can reduce button presses during a busy appointment. Low-heat or stepped-power modes are available on some lamps, but their effect and suitability depend on the product system and should not replace the prescribed cure schedule.
Lamp shape and hand placement
Internal space should allow the hand to sit flat without fingertips touching the diodes or roof. Removable bases can simplify pedicure use and cleaning. Reflective interiors and well-distributed diodes can help create more even exposure, but the manufacturer’s system validation remains the key reference.
Bulb replacement and lamp ageing
Older fluorescent UV lamps require periodic bulb replacement as output declines. LED-based lamps have no fluorescent tubes, but LEDs and electronics still age or fail. If curing behaviour changes, do not simply increase time indefinitely; inspect the lamp and follow manufacturer guidance.

Think in terms of a lamp-and-product system
Professional nail brands often develop gels and lamps together or specify lamp requirements for their systems. If a salon uses several gel brands, check the curing requirements for each and avoid assuming one cure schedule applies to all of them.
This system approach also helps with staff consistency. When every technician knows which lamp is used with which product range and the timer preset that belongs to that system, training is clearer and appointments are more repeatable.
Where the lamp sits on the manicure desk matters
The client should be able to move from application position into the curing lamp without dragging cables across the work area or knocking the dust collector. A lamp placed too far to the side can encourage the client to twist the wrist; one placed too deep can force the technician to lean around it.
Plan the lamp, hand rest and extraction together. A clean workstation normally gives each item one permanent zone so the service flows from preparation to application to curing without constant rearrangement.
Keep the curing chamber clean and unobstructed
Uncured gel on the base or internal surfaces can create a sticky working area and may affect how comfortably hands are positioned. Clean the lamp using methods compatible with the housing and reflective surfaces, and avoid scratching or covering diodes. Is an LED nail lamp still a UV lamp?
In modern nail terminology, LED lamps typically use LEDs that emit ultraviolet wavelengths. “LED” describes the light source technology; it does not mean the curing process is UV-free.
Can any LED lamp cure any gel polish?
No. Use a lamp that is compatible with the product system according to the relevant manufacturer instructions.
Is 120W better than 48W for a nail lamp?
Not automatically. Wattage alone does not describe the UV irradiance at each nail or product compatibility. Optical design and the validated curing system matter more.
How often should I replace a nail lamp?
