How nail-file grit numbers work
A lower number indicates larger abrasive particles and a coarser file. A higher number indicates a finer abrasive. Double-sided files may combine two grits for different stages.
80 grit: very coarse
80 grit is generally reserved for reducing or shaping robust artificial enhancement material. It is too aggressive for normal filing directly on the natural nail.
100 grit: coarse enhancement shaping
100 grit is commonly used for shortening and shaping acrylic or hard enhancement product. Pressure should remain controlled because coarse abrasives remove material quickly.
180 grit: versatile refining grit
180 grit is widely used for refining enhancement shape and can be suitable for some natural-nail edge work when used appropriately. Product and tool guidance should still be followed.
240 grit: finer natural-nail work
240 grit is finer and often used for gentle shaping or smoothing of natural nails. It removes less material per stroke.
Buffer grits and polishing blocks
Buffers can use finer grits to smooth or prepare surfaces. Do not over-buff natural nails simply to create shine or adhesion.
Natural nail vs enhancement
The same file should not automatically be used with the same pressure on acrylic, hard gel and natural nail. Match grit and technique to the material being filed.

Follow manufacturer guidance for whether a file is disposable, washable or designed for disinfection. Porous files should not be treated as reusable simply because they still look clean.
